Fulton County approves $1.2 billion expansion for Rice Street Jail in Atlanta
On Aug. 20, the Fulton County Commission approved a $1.2 billion plan to expand Fulton County Jail, otherwise known as Rice Street Jail. The decision follows extended efforts opposing the deal and attempts to halt the expansion by groups like Women on the Rise and Communities Over Cages.
On Nov. 14, 2024, the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division and U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia released an extensive investigative report of the jail detailing multiple civil rights violations, including excessive force by officers, environmental and health hazards, unsafe restricted access to medical and mental health care, and more.
